Common Laptop Display Problems

Laptop screen issues range from a simple cable fault to a panel that needs full replacement. Here's how to recognise what you're dealing with.

Cracked or spider-web screen

Physical damage from a drop or pressure on the lid — this almost always requires a full display replacement.

Flickering or flashing

Can be caused by a loose display cable (often linked to hinge wear), a failing backlight, or occasionally a graphics driver issue.

Lines or discolouration

Vertical or horizontal lines usually point to a damaged panel or a connector issue, rather than a software problem.

Completely blank screen

If the laptop is clearly powered on (fan running, keyboard lights active) but the screen stays black, this could be the backlight, the panel, or in some cases the graphics component on the motherboard.

Dim or uneven brightness

A failing backlight often causes dimness or uneven brightness across the screen, even when brightness settings are turned up fully.
